As part of the 2013 Venice Art Biennale, influential and often controversial artist Ai Weiwei has created a large installation that employs 886 three-legged wooden stools produced by traditional craftsmen whose expertise is now something that is hard to find. The piece is inspired by the artistic and cultural traditions of China, where it used to be common practice for families to pass at least one wooden stool down through each generation. However, since the cultural revolution the production of these simple objects dropped and metal and plastic became the standard materials for furniture production. Here, the single stool can be seen as a metaphor for the individual, living in an excessive world which is developing faster than it is possible to keep up with.
